For years, the idea that a car can be powered directly by sunlight has been suggested as a future possibility. Universities have built solar corridors of power – small, ultra-light vehicles built narrow bicycle parts, but a practical car remains a myth. Until now.

In France, Venturi – a specialist sports car manufacturer – have been developing a new brand of three squares of cars that can be powered purely by sunlight. Meanwhile in India, the Reva electric car maker has been a demonstration version of its four solar safety seats the city.

Venturi say they will have their car in production and available for sale in late 2009.

Both cars are designed electric cars for inner city. Solar panels installed on the roof charge the batteries and provide a single solar charge up to 5 miles (8 km) per day. The range can be increased by plugging the car into a wall outlet power source if necessary.

Although the solar array may not seem like much, many drivers only use their cars for short journeys and only use their car once or twice a week. For these people, a solar car is now able to provide these people with transport completely powered by the sun.

For obvious reasons, these solar cars are more suited to sunny climates. However, even in colder climates, solar powered cars may have a future: electric vehicle batteries benefit from steady trickle charged when not in use to maintain internal temperature – which even in winter, solar energy has the potential to significantly increase the reach of an electric car, keeping the temperature of the car batteries when not in use.

With the continued development of electric cars and promotion of solar panels with better capabilities and costs more low, can not be that long before solar electric cars may become a common sight on our roads.
