Do any of the commonly advertised DIY PV solar panels work? Many say that for $ 200.00. you can make one.?

My husband and I wanted to build a solar (PV) on our small farm to learn the basics. We do not want to pay thousands of dollars to buy a panel that may be obsolete in a few years. The home versions sound good to be true. They are just scams?
