solar panels air conditioner

How can I reduce the use of electricity and cooling costs this summer?
The power company recently doubled the area their rates. They have a monopoly and apparently have no other alternative, unless we all want to start buying solar panels to our roof. I am very concerned by cooling costs this summer when air conditioning is turned on. What do I do now to prepare for the summer months?
1. Sure your air conditioner has been repaired – Clean outdoor unit, change the filter, lubricate any moving parts – will function efficiently. 2. Open house at night to let fresh air in. 3. Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs throughout the house, and keep lights off unless the room. 4. Turn the thermostat up 2-4 degrees and wear light clothing. 5. Keep heavy curtains or blinds closed in the west of the windows to keep heat out. 6. Outdoor cooking on the grill for keep warm in the house. Reduce the amount of baking, and take time to learn new recipes for salads and other fresh dishes. 7. The exercise before the shower – the water cooler feels good and you save money by not using all the hot water. 8. Check the insulation around doors and windows. 9. Turn off computer when not in use. 10. Exit a walk outside instead of watching TV. For long-term savings, plant trees and shrubs around the western part of the house to earn some shade. Add flowers near of the house. Install an attic fan. Consider replacing your HVAC unit with a new, more energy-efficient unit. (You can even get a tax cut!) But all that takes patience and a few years for recovery.
