solar panel battery charging circuit

I need help with a solar panel?
I'm trying to charge the rechargeable AA batteries with a solar panel. What gauge wire should I use to connect the panel to the batteries? Should I use a diode to keep the batteries fall of the circuit? If so, what size? My panel is 4.8V 50mA.
With this size panel, must be able to recharge or 1 AA battery or two AA batteries in series. Yes, it would be a good idea to put a diode in series with the panel – nothing to do, as one 1N4148. You will use NiCd batteries, if possible, because they have a minimum of 50 mA load much better than NiMH (who prefers the load pulse, a circuit more complicated). You can use NiMH if duty. Needless to say, do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Also note that in this type of cargo, which can take days, maybe even a week to charge the batteries, if not in full sun all day.
