With that in mind, would like to inform our readers about a new project at Harvard University and IBM, which aims to harness the power of one million computers idle for a newer cheaper form of energy plot that could transform the current paradigm of renewable energy.
Using IBM 's World Community Grid, researchers are embarking in a project that draws on volunteer 'computers around the world to perform calculations on multiple components to discover a combination of organic materials that could be used to make plastic solar cells that are less costly and more flexible than silicon, based in use today.
This network could shorten the organic solar research in more than two decades and just two years, but requires cooperation.
Technology, once identified, could be used for Windows shelter, building surfaces, roofs, sidewalks and driveways, possibly even to produce solar energy. Incorporated into everything from backpacks to rugs (think solar tents in winter, for example) could provide solar energy isolated circuits that provide light and energy where not possible before. For example, a solar cell material backpack fabric could absorb the sun 's rays during the day and use that power at night in light of the backpack, protecting children during the dark days of winter as they travel to and from school.
The technology exists, but what is enough cheap marketing is the ultimate goal, says Alan Aspurur-Guzik, a chemistry researcher at Harvard University, notes that current organic cells only deliver five per cent of the energy they receive, compared with 20 percent efficiency rate for silicon-based photovoltaics.
To participate, visit the World Community Grid.org. Participants will be asked to install a free, small software program on their computers safe and when is inactive, is used to "cloud " calculate the best path to organic solar. A screen saver will ask users when their computers are being used.
