When I read and hear the news, I conclude that the U.S. is the richest country in the world peace. We have to be. Only in a rich country at peace could many trivial issues make the news, and occupy our attention and energy.

Some examples of what I mean:

There is a movement underway to provide plants with the same "rights" as animals. The members of the movement would probably give the plants the same rights as humans, if they could get away with it. Switzerland has recently passed a bill granting just that right. The Swiss have been very rich country, very small, very quiet for so long, not surprising. Perhaps one of our urgent needs should be the creation of an agency to ensure the integrity of the corn or soybeans, or tomatoes … One earmark that things started, perhaps?

Amid the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression – one candidate's campaign revealed that September was a record breaker donations – $ 150 million in a month. Probably enough money to feed a small country for a year. Coppers in our U.S. – Do not start talking about real money until you reach the tens – no – make that hundreds of billions. Ask any representative or senator. Only in a rich country.

The candidate himself has taken a half hour of TV space for an infomercial about why he should be the next president. He has to spend all that money somewhere – time is running out! I thought those infomercials were mostly on Sunday morning, how advertising really to clean your colon – or how to really get those thighs in shape. In this case, the infomercial is in primetime on three networks, and – here is the outrage – that could result in a world series game have to be delayed by six or eight minutes to play here. Damn! How can you not feel affected by this type presumption!

The OPEC nations are going to stop production of their oil. The price per barrel has fallen because of slumping demand, so they want to keep the charge for the outage. We are not in OPEC. After all the noise and thunder about all the things we do to drill, develop sources renewable energy, blah, blah, blah, the only action being taken is to stiff arm the development of renewable energy using tried and true technology and fuels.

And electric cars – how precious. Simply plug the little buggers on the wall and let them charge. Problem solved. Except, Where does the juice from? Do not worry about that. In ten years all our energy is clean and renewable. It still appears that ten years. Is not that Latest reason for not drilling – it would take ten years to see any benefits? You have to be rich and at peace to launch about ten years.

No drilling, no natural gas – and that someone remind Nancy Pelosi that natural gas is a fossil fuel. Only in the U.S. that the number of three people in our elected government did not know. Whatta country!

Only in a rich country at peace could be around 95% of Congress running for reelection reeelction – The approval rating for Congress hovers around 10% – and that's being kind. Whatta country!

A federal judge recently set aside large tracts of offshore areas for polar bears – no drilling, exploration or other activity that is allowed in these areas. No fuss, no coverage press to talk about. We have access to all the energy we need. Based on the lack of urgency shown by everyone, which is the only conclusion I can draw. At least until the next pulse, or a war – or a real dent in our pockets. We prefer to pay foreign countries to produce and ship its oil to us to develop our own resources – Whatta country!

Only in a rich country at peace if you can or not your fantasy football team wins on Sunday that the main question Hot weekend. And you want to take the Phillies in four – or rays in 7 – and how much to bet?

Only in a rich country at peace can be much be of so little – while the great things just get battered around. Both candidates propose what most of us know that they are plans that never happen. And we'll just move on. After all, we're the richest country in the world, and with the exception of the two wars being fought by our military annoying professionals, we are at peace – a little. Terrorists? They treat them like criminals can be. Give them access to our judicial system. Maybe I should be able to sue for unlawful detention. Or for not being Mirandaized?

So all this has given me hungry. What's for dinner – outdoors vegan, organic, fresh or frozen line caught, ethically harvested or slaughtered, no supplements, Omega – 3, soy, high fiber, no trans fats, low cholesterol? How we can think of other things when so many choices lie before me?

That's what happens in rich countries at peace – until you are.
