University Research into Alternative Energy

Decades of research in the biomass of trees and conducted jointly by the Statue of Florida University and Shell Energy have resulted in the planting of the most important "energy crop plantation" across America. This includes the planting of approximately 130 acres and is home to over 250,000 planted trees such as poplars (natives of the area) and eucalyptus (non-invasive) along with various row crops such as soybeans.

This organization of "super trees" was brought into existence as a result of joint research of the University with other agencies including Shell, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Institute common purpose, and groups of several individuals who are working to develop alternative energy sources (those not dependent on fossil fuels) for the future. This research focuses on planting and processing of energy supplies of biomass from fast-growing crops known as "closed loop biomass" or simply "energy crops".

The project aims to develop "power plants" such as wood pulp or wood-fiber to provide plants, biogas clean to be used by industries, in plants such as sugarcane that can be used for ethanol development and crops such as soybeans for biodiesel fuel production.

The University involvement in alternative energy research is also happening at Penn State University. At Penn State, special research is focused on developing hydrogen energy as an alternative source of energy practice. The researchers involved are convinced that humanity is moving toward a hydrogen fuel economy, due to the necessity for us to reduce air pollution and finding alternative sources of energy, besides oil to power the United States.

The energy of the hydrogen is burned clean and can be endlessly renewed, as they can be extracted from water and crop plants. Hydrogen energy would therefore be a source of sustainable energy are within the U.S. own infrastructure "While the world supply of (affordable) oil peaks and begins to decline. The University is help with the commercial development of hydrogen fuel cells that could be used in place of or in tandem with combustion engines for all our vehicles motor.

When President Bush recently announced his alternative energy initiative, the government was determined to develop five "Sun Grant" research concentrates. Oregon State University has the honor of being selected as one of these establishments and have been allocated government grants of $ 20 million for each of the next four years to carry out its mission. OSU will lead the way in alternative energy research because it represents the interests of the Pacific Islands, the U.S. Pacific "Territories, and nine western states.

OSU President Edward Ray says, research which are conducted through OSU's Sun Grant center will contribute directly to our meeting to run against President Bush's energy independence. Specific alternative energy research being conducted at OSU by several teams of scientists right now include a project to find a way to turn efficient products such as straw into a source of renewable biomass fuel, and another aimed at exploring ways to efficiently convert wood fibers into liquid fuel.
