In many countries today, much has been said about the use of renewable energy technologies – particularly in view of oil prices.
Renewable energy is the power that has been generated from renewable resources – in other words, not "exhausted" or time runs out. Can be continuously recreated.
It's not just oil prices that have people looking for sources of clean and renewable energy. Concerns about global warming, and the problems created by international pollution, have caused this concern also. Governments around the world have begun to support research on improving of renewable energy technologies.
Currently, the five common renewable energy sources are biomass, hydropower, geothermal heat, wind, and solar energy.
Biomass
Biomass is organic material that has been produced by animals and plants. Biomass energy uses the energy stored by the sun. This is the result of any natural process that plants use to survive – photosynthesis.
Because you can always grow new crops and trees, biomass is considered a form of renewable energy. Furthermore, the organic waste can be used to create biomass as well.
Some examples of biomass fuels used are crops, timber, litter and manure. When burning these materials, which emit heat to produce steam, which in turn can be used to create electricity. Some biomass is converted into other usable energy forms, such as methane gas or biodiesel.
Hydropower
Hydropower is one of the oldest forms renewable energy. This was used in ancient times for grinding grain. Coal was the only source of power in the United States. But in 1880, the hydropower plant was first built, and since then, most of these have been erected in order to provide people with electricity.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy comes from within the Earth itself. Water vapor and heat coming from the center of the Earth can be used to regulate the temperature of buildings, and can be used to generate electricity.
Because water can always be replenished by rain, and since the core of the earth maintains its temperature, this is considered a form of renewable energy.
Wind Energy
Even the ever-present wind can provide a source renewable energy. Wind is created as a result of uneven heating of the earth's surface, which causes air to move. Thus, wind energy is essentially a bi-product of solar energy. Wind propellers are used to collect the kinetic energy of wind, which turns the turbines which in turn is used to create electricity.
Solar Power
This form of renewable energy available if the sun shines. Solar energy can be used as thermal energy, or can be converted into electricity.
As thermal energy, which can be used to heat water or spaces. By using similar solar cells or photovoltaic devices can be used to create electricity. The heat from the sun can also be used to create steam, which turns the turbines and produce electricity.
